Have you heard about the Masai shoes, the strange looking shoe that is said to cure everything from back pain to cellulites?



What the engineer Karl Muller had in mind when he created them, was to create another way for us to walk, that take less toll on our bodies, because that is what it does for us in the west, mostly walking on hard and even surfaces. When we walk, there's a lot of pressure on the foot, pressure that gets distributed through the whole body.

If you have uncomfortable shoes or walk a lot on hard surfaces, it can result in different problems; back pain, heavy legs, neck pain, etc. The Masai shoes are made in a way that evens the pressure out through out the whole foot, from sole to toe. The sole of the shoe are built in layers, each one created to change the way you walk. The first layer is a glass fibre layer that gives the natural rolling movement for the whole foot, from heel to toe. Layer number two is the thick one, the part that creates a feeling of walking on a soft and uneven surface, a bit like walking on soft moss. In that way the shoe can activate neglected muscle groups that are not used when walking with normally. Next comes the part that are a section placed under the heel. It completes the walking by making the sole of your feet really sink in to a soft surface. The last part protects the others and are designed to make it easy to walk everywhere and in different weather conditions.

What you get is more activity in the rear thigh muscle, more activity in the lower limbs muscle and LESS stress on knee and hip joints. Seems to be a good combination, doesn't it?

When I started to use Masai shoes, one of the nice benefits was that my posture really improved. I didn't get as tired in the back at the end of the day as I used to.

The Masai shoes are used by many athletes to rebuild muscles when they are recovering from injuries, much because they reduce pressure on the knees. So, if you are suffering with knee problems and are having trouble exercising because of that, it might be a good idea to start walking with a pair of Masai shoes.

You can use the Masai's in your everyday life. Once your body got used to the shoes (it takes a little while, the can sure feel a bit wiggly to walk with for at the beginning, but you'll get used to them in a week or so), clean your house with them, go shopping, wear them at work.
